Washington Swiss Needle Cast Working Group’s Aberdeen-area field trip (June 2nd 2022) and in-person meeting (June 3rd 2022)

The Olympic Natural Resources Center is pleased to announce dates for the Washington Swiss Needle Cast Working Group’s Aberdeen-area field trip (June 2nd 2022) and in-person meeting (June 3rd 2022).

The Working Group Advisory Board has organized a field trip Thursday, June 2nd; 7:00 am – 5:00 pm to look at some impacted stands and species trials north of Aberdeen.  We’ll visit (1) the SNC test site and nearby hemlock plantation on Rayonier land west of Hoquiam, (2) a comparable healthy Douglas-fir stand; and (3) the alternate species trial near Humptulips.

This will be followed on Friday, June 3rd with a Working Group in-person meeting and seminars; 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Rotary Log Pavilion in Aberdeen.  Presentations and discussion will cover basics of current knowledge about Swiss Needle Cast Disease and how it affects Douglas-fir tree growth (Dave Shaw; OSU Swiss Needle Cast coop lead); economic considerations including a new Needle Cast calculator under development (Sandor Toth and student); considerations for switching to alternative species; presentations to describe industry and agency strategies, and a variety of other topics under development.

I am also pleased to introduce Brett Morrissette who will be heading up outreach for the Working Group; from whom you will receive further information.

We hope you can save these dates in your calendar to attend one or both of these events.
