ONRC
Projects Supported by PNW Funds
The USDA Forest
Service, Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Research Station
distributes funding to ONRC as a result of Congressional
earmarking. The annual
funding amount varies; in fiscal year 2001, funding includes
$200,000 designated to support the implementation of the Forest
Service Northwest Forest Plan, while $50,000 is allocated to
non-Northwest Forest Plan research.
ONRC
Marine Program Projects
ONRC's
Marine Program thus far focuses around two projects, Control of
Spartina in Willapa Bay and Olympic
Region Harmful Algal Blooms. We have worked closely with a wide array of
stakeholders: agencies,
private organizations, business associations and regional and
local
public interest groups to evaluate and test a biological
control
option to control the invasive weed Spartina. Thus far, ONRC has
directly or
cooperatively
assembled approximately $1.5 million for Spartina-related
research,
education and outreach activities. Research now underway on "harmful
algal blooms"
was made possible by ONRC's work to develop a coalition - the
Olympic Regional Harmful Algal Bloom
(ORHAB)
working group-- of stakeholders, researchers, professionals, and
agencies
with a common interest in blooms of toxin producing algae.
Thus far, this regional coalition
has
attracted over $1.4 million dollars of support from the National
Oceanic
and
Atmospheric Administration for its work. Its objectives are to
develop
locally
sustainable monitoring capabilities so that coastal communities
can
be
prepared for and mitigate the impacts of harmful algal blooms.
Research
Funded from Other Sources
In
addition to PNW supported projects and marine program projects, ONRC
supports research, conferences, and forums relevant to our
mission serving coastal communities and natural resource
professionals. These
projects are funded by a variety of supporters including
foundations, corporations, agencies and local governments.
