Project Overview 2001
The
Response of Coarse Woody Debris (CWD) Invertebrates to
Alternative Silvicultural Practices
Principal
Investigators:
Dr.

Resources
Dr. Jim Marra, University of Washington, College of Forest Resources
Awarded: $7,000
Project
Description:
This study samples early Habitat Development Study installations
of variable density thinning in the Soleduck ranger district,
comparing CWD invertebrates in thinned versus unthinned plots.
In addition, the project compares CWD invertebrates in clumped
versus dispersed CWD treatments at a site in the Hood Canal
ranger district. Results of this study will be used to evaluate
alternative methods of harvesting that attempt to combine timer
harvesting with the creation of late successional wildlife
habitat. Supplemental
funding in 2001 will be used for the identification of coarse
woody debris arthropods as part of the proposed study
investigating coarse woody debris arthropod response to variable
density thinning and bundling of small diameter coarse woody
debris.
Project Status:
2001
funds will be distributed to projects in September 2001. In cooperation with
Dr. Andrew Moldenke, Entomology Department
Oregon State University, remaining identification will be
completed during the winter of 2001-2002. The remainder of
2002 will be devoted to data analysis and write up of a final
manuscript to be submitted for publication.
