PNW Project Overview 1999

Enhancing a Clearinghouse for Natural Resources Information on the Olympic Peninsula

Principal Investigators:
Dr. David L. Peterson, University of Washington, College of Forest Resources
Dr. Nicholas R. Chrisman, University of Washington, Department of Geography
Edward G. Schreiner, USGS Biological Resources Division,
Olympic Field Station
, Washington

Awarded: $44,700

Project Description:
The Olympic Peninsula Clearinghouse is now a fully operational node of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and National Biological Information Infrastructure, and has strong regional support from agencies and nongovernmental organizations.  Researchers will continue to build and improve the Clearinghouse in cooperation with the Olympic Natural Resources Center (ONRC).  Enhancements to the Clearinghouse will focus on recommendations provided by resource managers, scientists, and other stakeholders at the recent ONRC Science Conference.  In addition to continuing to compile metadata records, the project will:

1.   broaden the scope of efforts from a metadata clearinghouse to an information clearinghouse to facilitate use by greater numbers of individuals and organizations,

2.   improve the design of the Clearinghouse web site by reorganizing metadata browse lists by theme and developing a graphical user interface,

3.   expand representation of hydrographic and other cross-jurisdictional metadata and data for the Olympic Peninsula, ranging from headwaters to the coast.

In addition, the project will develop a maintenance manual and other protocols to assist ONRC in operating the Clearinghouse independently following completion of the development phase.

Project Status:
The Clearinghouse was enhanced to include a browse by theme section. The Clearinghouse was represented at several conferences or workshops listed below.  On line presentations are available.

1. Lief Horwitz from USGS and Teresa Alcock from ONRC GIS presented: “Communicating with Maps and the Internet: Online Mapping with
USGS GEODE and the ONRC Clearinghouse for the Olympic Peninsula” at the Livable Communities Seminar in Port Angeles, WA, March 2000.
