Project
Description:
This
project will continue the development of a Federal Geographic Data
Committee Clearinghouse node for the Olympic Peninsula by compiling
natural resource metadata in an easily accessible database. This effort
will expand the existing Olympic Natural Resources Center Clearinghouse (ONRC)
for geospatial data by including a wide range of topics in the natural
sciences and resource management. The project emphasizes a balance of
documentation for both coastal/marine resources and forest resources for
the Peninsula, thereby facilitating the study of marine-forest
interactions. In addition to developing the database, technical assistance
will be provided for outreach by assisting with metadata creation,
producing educational materials, and convening metadata workshops.
Cooperative relationships for the ONRC and Olympic Coast National Marine
Sanctuary with federal, state and local agencies will be established, as
well as tribes, researchers, private landowners, and other
non-governmental organizations. The final database will reside on the ONRC
Web site where it will be accessible to all parties interested in Olympic
Peninsula natural resources.
Objectives:
- Manage
a node on the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse that will include
metadata from various governmental and non-governmental participants
on the Olympic Peninsula.
- Expand
representation of biological thematic and coastal and ocean data for
the Peninsula and its surrounding waters.
- Develop
outreach
programs that explain the benefits of data sharing, the use of
networks for data sharing and the importance of data documentation to
organizations on the Peninsula.
Project Status:
Project
continued in 1999.
Project
Progress:
The
Olympic Peninsula Clearinghouse is now a fully operational node of the
National Spatial Data Infrastructure and
National Biological Information
Infrastructure, and has strong regional support from agencies and
nongovernmental organizations. The
Olympic Peninsula Clearinghouse has grown rapidly over the past year, and
now includes 36 partners and over 233 metadata records.
In
February 1999, ONRC hosted a two-day winter science conference entitled,
“Putting the Olympic Peninsula on the Map.”
The conference brought together Olympic Peninsula GIS professionals
and other interested natural resource professionals under the umbrellas of
GIS Infrastructure and Education and Olympic Peninsula GIS Applications to
identify challenges and generate potential solutions upon which ONRC can
target strategies in growing GIS educational opportunities and
facilitating integrated GIS application in natural resources management,
research and education on the Olympic Peninsula. Speakers presented
relevant examples of working with GIS on Olympic Peninsula events and
phenomena, and workgroups rallied around specific issues under each
umbrella to generate targeted solutions upon which ONRC can base its GIS
services.
The Clearinghouse
was represented at several other conferences or workshops listed below.
1. Robert Norheim
presented the ONRC Clearinghouse to the NSDI Partnerships Workshop for
CCAP grant recipients in Charleston, South Carolina on September 22-24
1998.
