The Deer Mouse
The Deer mouse is part of the genus Peromyscus. Its' own fancy scientific name is maniculatus. A Deer mouse is about 4 4/5 -9 inches in size. Its' paw prints are ¼ of an inch long. When it leaps, however, the span of the tracks can vary from 2 to 9 inches! What's very weird is that in light snow you may see 2 long tracks & 1 very long (compared to the first 2) track made by the tail. The first prints are actually made by the front & hind feet sharing the same print; measuring about 1 ¼ in. {3.175cm}! To see paws and mice go to this web page:

The Deer mouse can be found almost anywhere from Alaska to Northern Mexico! Deer mice are the most widely spread mouse. Its' color can vary from a pale gray to a deep red or brown. That is a very colorful animal! The tail is always light on the bottom & dark on the top. This mouse species is often mistaken to be a different mouse species.
The Deer mouse lives in many dry-land areas that it can travel to. Some forests or grasslands.
