Description:
-
Abstract:
-
This coverage is a land cover map of the lower Dungeness river watershed,
northern Olympic peninsula, Washington, USA. Land cover categories were
done based on distinguishable photo characteristics only, and did not include
soils, land tenure, or other sources of information. It was done based
on what was visible the day the photos were flown. Land cover was classified
based on water use. Thus all kinds of (unirrigated) forest were lumped
together as forest if their crowns were closed, while an area of grass
might be lawn, field, grassy/brushy, or pasture, depending on its apparent
use.
-
Purpose:
-
The purpose of this coverage is to be a part of a time series of coverages
which show land cover and water use changes in the lower Dungeness watershed
from 1859 to 1994
-
Supplemental_Information:
-
More detailed information about these coverages is available in Penelope
Eckert's Phd Thesis, University of Washington, College of Forest Resources,
June 1998.

Process_Description:

This coverage is a directly digitized coverage, derived from aerial photographic
interpretation and land use classification. This interpretation used the
1:12,000 DNR stereo photos for 1990. The classification was done based
on distinguishable photo characteristics only, and did not include soils,
land tenure, or other sources of information. It was done based on what
was visible the day the photos were flown. Land cover was classified based
on water use. Thus all kinds of (unirrigated) forest were lumped together
as forest if their crowns were closed, while an area of grass might be
lawn, field, grassy/brushy, or pasture, depending on its apparent use.
Classifications were made based on a one-acre minimum size, though isolated
buildings and lawns of much smaller size were routinely distinguished when
widely separated. Land cover classes were transferred with a monocular
zoom transfer scope to a base map.

Process_Description:
-
The georeferenced, orthorectified base map was derived from DNR landlines
contained in the POCA coverages for the area. Road locations as specified
in the Clallam County trsqmx coverage were used for orientation. Land classifications
derived from 1:12,000 stereo aerial photography taken in 1990 were first
delineated and transferred. After update was completed, the dissolve function
in Arc was used to create a coverage where adjacent polygons with the same
land cover code were joined into one polygon.

-
Land cover is the type of surface features that appear to exist within
the study area. Land cover does not imply land use. For example, land use
for "bare" lands varied from active gravel mines to protected park beaches
and from highway right-of-way fill slopes to the shifting sediments of
the Dungeness River bed. This land cover classification was done based
on distinguishable photo characteristics only, and did not include soils,
land tenure, or other sources of information.
