Description:
Abstract:
This coverage shows the extent of lands controlled by irrigation districts and companies for the Dungeness watershed on the northern Olympic Peninsula in 1924. Irrigation companies were formed during the early years of settlement by farmers who joined together in cooperative efforts to transport water from the river to their lands. These companies had very little contact with or control by government entities such as the State of Washington. In later years of settlement when water needed to be transported over greater and more difficult distances, and the costs were greater, irrigation districts were set up with the help of the state. These two systems are reflected in the district and company boundaries of the coverage. Some areas have multiple suppliers indicating that land owners in these sections had a choice of which company/district to join. The original map was developed for submission to the State of Washington for the purpose of adjudication of water rights in the Dungeness watershed.
Purpose:
The purpose of this coverage is to illustrate the development of the irrigation system of the Dungeness watershed up until 1924. In concert with more modern irrigation and land cover maps the changes in irrigation water use can be established.
