Methodology_Description:

One of the higher elevation tree clumps in the Hoh Lake Basin was chosen to investigate growth dynamics of tree clumps in subalpine parkland. The clump chosen was on the last bench before the westerly peak of the basin (Figure 1). The central trees of the clump were all mountain hemlock, which established on a high spot on the knell defining the easterly edge of the bench. Slopes were very gentle (5-10 %) towards the south, west, and north; to the east, a sharp drop occurred about 3 m east of the clump center, and the easterly slope exceeded 40%. Transects were established in the four cardinal directions from the plot center. The 2 m wide transects were divided into seven 3 m long segments. Cover of trees, herbs, and shrubs within each segment was recorded. Age of all trees inside the transect segment was established by increment coring trees at a low core ht, or clipping very small specimens. The clipped samples were used to provide a ht- age correlation for age corrections of other trees from core ht to the ground. These trees were all subalpine firs, and the regression for this cool, wet site was Y(age, years) = 7.194 + 0.887X(ht,cm) (n = 12, r-sq = 0.91)
