Title:
Serving Olympic Region Management Priorities Through GIS
Principal investigator(s); affiliations(s):

Project description:
Olympic Natural Resources Center (ONRC) was established to promote research and education necessary to integrate commodity production and ecological values in the management of natural resources. With the development of sophisticated computer-based GIS, it is now commonplace that “layers” of biological, chemical, physical, and social data are viewed, compared, and “integrated” for evaluation. Following the recommendation of the Olympic Peninsula Research Coordinating Group—a group representing the active community of researchers interested in our area’s natural resources, ONRC spent several years establishing the “Clearinghouse for the Olympic Peninsula”-an archive for regional geospatial and biological information. In 2000, ONRC held a regional GIS conference. One of the general themes heard repeatedly pertained to the numerous difficulties associated with putting GIS to work for practical management. This project will evaluate and test how GIS services and tools can be provided to resource managers to improve management and better serve the communities of interests in the Olympic region through the development of a GIS capability at Olympic Natural Resources Center.
